Topic for discussion: Nathan Bedford Forrest
Greg’s topic is titled “Nathan Bedford Forrest – Napoleonic Cavalryman.” Beginning with an analysis of how Napoleon fought battles using cavalry on a tactical basis as well as in the pursuit phase, this lecture delves into how most Civil War commanders failed to use cavalry properly in a Napoleonic sense. Greg presents a brief history of American cavalry as well as its doctrine and then illustrates how Forrest used cavalry both tactically and in pursuit during all phases of his military career. |

Dr. Anne J. Bailey is a professor of history and the author of eight Civil War books, numerous book chapters, and more than 250 articles and reviews. Dr. Bailey is also general editor of “Great Campaigns of the Civil War,” a military and social history of the conflict published by the University of Nebraska Press, and she serves as editor of the SCWH Newsletter, a quarterly publication of the international Society of Civil War Historians. Three of Anne’s books focus on Texas cavalry serving the Trans-Mississippi.
